Hot Fall Color: Oxblood and more...

Hot Fall Color: Oxblood

Forever 21 striped Oxblood sweater

If it wasn't apparent during last night's Emmy Awards, Oxblood is the color for fall. It's not exactly burgundy, but it's not brown either. It's a mix of both - and when I see it, I immediately think of my step mom who has used this as one of the main colors to decorate my parents' house. I also think about many parts of the east coast where they experience a real fall season with leaves that change to this color.

I didn't have anything in my wardrobe in oxblood, so it was the perfect opportunity to go shopping for the latest Bloggers Do It Better challenge. Now is the best time to go shopping anyways as many retailers are having awesome sales to clear space for new fall merchandise. I scored the striped sweater for $4.99 this past weekend at Forever 21 during their additional 50% sale clearance.

I'm wearing the sweater with a pair of Mossimo "skinny" khakis I bought at Target a few years ago. I painted my nails in Forever 21's polish, which I don't recommend because it started to chip within one day. I just so happen to have DKNY eyeglasses in an oxblood color, so of course I had to include them as part of the outfit. The earrings I bought at a boutique in Miami (forgot the name, sorry!) and the bracelets are my own creations...

I put together this spread of oxblood pieces I've added to the fall wardrobe wishlist...

See how other fashion bloggers do Oxblood better over at Pretty Shiny Sparkly...

MoroccanOil Treatment Oil Review

MoroccanOil booth at Cosmoprof

One of a woman's most precious physical asset is her hair. As I was watching the Emmy's last night, the one thing I noticed first about how celebrities looked was their hair. You could have the most beautiful gown or kick-ass heels, but if the hair isn't taken care of, it could throw the whole outfit off - especially if the hair is dry and frazzled.

Fortunately, celebrities have professional stylists who help take care of their hair, but for those of us who can't afford to go to the salon every week, there are many products out there that can make us look as if we do. MoroccanOil Treatment Oil is one of those products.

Before argan oil became "the thing" to use for your hair, I used hot oil treatments back in the day to get rid of the frizz in my hair. However, I didn't like the hassle of waiting to heat it up. When I first started using argan oil on my hair and dry scalp, I found that not all brands are alike. Some products would make the hair near my roots slick and oily-looking, so I could only use them on the ends of my hair to help prevent split ends.

MoroccanOil offers a full range of hair products in addition to the oil treatment, which can be found via online sites like www.wantthelook.com

The only product I've tried is the treatment oil, which is instantly absorbed by the hair and keeps it hydrated and shiny without weighing down your hair and making it look oily. You can use it on wet or dry hair and even on extensions or wigs. The formula is lightweight enough that I don't have to wash my hands after applying it to my hair. I just wipe my hands along the top of my arms to get rid of any excess, if any.

In the video below, Orlando Pita talks about how he created the hairstyle for Carolina Herrera's Spring 2013 show using MoroccanOil products...

Peter Gray for Moroccanoil talks about the dreamy looks he and his team created for the Badgley Mischka Spring 2013 show...

Have you tried MoroccanOil products? If so, what do you think?

Messages Through Fashion

My father is a big Beatles fan, so my childhood is filled with memories that include Beatles songs. I didn't think too much about the words they sang back then, but I loved the melodies...and their hair.

So when I saw this t-shirt with the lyrics of "Let it Be" printed on it at the local flea market for $1, there's no way that I could not buy it. It's been my favorite t-shirt to wear this summer.

I put it on this morning because I just wanted to wear something comfortable. It is Saturday, after all. I also put on a long, black maxi skirt by Sag Harbor that I bought at Macy's back in '99. I always throw it in the dryer and it has never faded or shrunk!

With a cup of coffee in hand, I enjoyed the morning, but memories of childhood started to fill my mind as I am in the home I grew up in. I'll be here for a week dog-sitting while my dad, step-mom, and grandparents are taking a trip to Canada.

My typical Saturday :: Hair up in a bun, no makeup, and comfortable clothes

I started to think about my mom who passed away back in '89, so it's only fitting that I would wear this shirt with the message "Let it Be". What a great reminder.

Jewelry Trends Fall/Winter 2012

Based on the the many runway looks for this fall and winter 2012, I conclude that just about anything goes, but there are a few stand-out jewelry trends worth mentioning...

Custom diamond jewelry - What's winter without wearing a little "ice"? We're not just talking about any type of jewelry with diamonds. This fall and winter it's all about custom, personalized pieces that reflect your individual style. Who doesn't like creating a custom necklace or bracelet where you can select the design, metal, gemstone, or the size and quality of diamond you want? I personally like these vintage style Anjolee bracelets...

Chunky statement necklaces - From big, colorful flower pendants and chunky chains to chunky stones, it's about bigger being better for the fall and winter season. You could wear these necklaces with a round-neck sweater for a casual look. You could also wear chunky necklaces with a blouse and blazer for work or a night on the town.

Chic and edgy black - Move over color, black has made its way back for fall and winter. Designers such as Versace, Alexander Wang, Givenchy, Fendi, and Yves St. Laurent turned black leather as inspiration for their fall/winter 2012 collections. Think modern gothic or luxe glamour that reflects the tough, bold, and confident dragon within you.

Multi-colored crystals - Don't put away Grandma's treasure chest just yet. Bold, colorful jewels such as chandelier earrings, headbands, chokers, and brooches in dazzling gold, pearls, and crystals can be worn with plain t-shirts, tweed dresses, or that red-carpet look for holiday parties.

Regardless of what jewelry trends you incorporate into your wardrobe this fall and winter, it's always good to have a few classic fine jewelry pieces when you just can't figure out what to wear. A timeless, natural look is always in style!

My Current Obsession: Nail Art

I blame Pinterest for my current obsession with nail art. Actually, it may have started with my friend's 7-year-old daughter who has the biggest collection of nail polishes I have ever seen. She's definitely a manicurist in the making.

When I was shopping for a gift to give my friend's daughter, I came across all these cool nail art supplies on Amazon.com. It got the creative juices spinning. Then I started seeing all this nail art on Pinterest. You can see some of my favorites that I've pinned to my Beauty board. I am now officially hooked.

The picture above is my interpretation of this "clouds" nail art design. I used Sally Hansen's Complete Salon Manicure in "Dive Deeper" as the base color followed by N.Y.C. Nail Glossies in #243B, and the top color is "Ms. Milani" Milani nail polish.

The next time I do my nails, I'm going to try out this technique from the Charlotte Ronson spring runway show at New York Fashion Week...

I also want to try out this marble nail art when I have more time and patience. Watch how it's done in the video tutorial below...

What's your favorite nail art?
